Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)
Sometimes we know what happened to us, but our minds and bodies still seem to carry the experience. You may understand that something is in the past, yet find yourself reacting with anxiety, sadness, fear, anger, or other strong emotions when something reminds you of it. Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a therapeutic approach that can help you process distressing memories and experiences so they no longer have the same hold on you.
In ART, I guide you through a series of eye movements and visualization exercises while you bring a difficult memory, image, or experience to mind. Rather than having to repeatedly talk through every detail of what happened, ART helps you work with the images, emotions, and physical sensations connected to the experience. You remain in control throughout the process, and the goal is to help your brain process the experience in a new way, reducing the emotional and physical distress associated with it.
ART can be helpful for people experiencing the effects of trauma, anxiety, grief, difficult relationships, emotional abuse, and other painful or distressing experiences. It can be particularly helpful when you feel like you've talked about something before but still feel stuck, or when you want to work through something without having to retell every detail.
ART can be used as a stand-alone therapy or integrated into the therapy process. Some clients choose to focus primarily on ART for a particular concern, while others find that it works beautifully alongside ongoing talk therapy. We can use ART when it feels helpful and appropriate, while continuing to explore the deeper patterns, relationships, beliefs, and experiences that are part of your larger healing journey.
